AI-generated answers increasingly point to specific web pages as their evidence. When those answers cite competitors or publishers while leaving your brand out, the citations themselves reveal where AI models are sourcing authority — and where you can take concrete action to regain visibility.
Start with the prompts that matter
Begin by defining a controlled set of prompts that map to real customer intent: problems they want solved, product comparisons they perform, feature requirements that drive decisions, and the brand-versus-brand questions prospects ask.
Don’t guess at prompts. Pull them from sales and support transcripts, customer interviews, product reviews and forum threads (Reddit is a fast source of recurring questions). You can expand the list with prompt-research tools, but keep the set focused on buyer intent so the results are actionable.
Run the same prompt set consistently against your tracking tool and chosen AI platform and location. That repeatability lets you compare which pages are cited for the identical prompts over time.
Read the Sources report: three signals that matter
When you inspect cited sources, focus on three signals:
- Pool size: How many unique pages contribute to answers across your prompt set?
- Source composition: Are answers driven by retailers, knowledge bases, publishers or other categories?
- Per-page/domain citation counts: Which URLs or domains are cited most often for your tracked prompts?
Use the report’s Pages view to see the exact URLs influencing answers, and the Domains view to benchmark your citation presence against competitors and third parties. A domain repeatedly cited while your site is absent is a clear citation gap to prioritize.
Turn citation gaps into three practical responses
Once you’ve identified the pages shaping answers in your category, choose one of three responses depending on the situation:
- Outreach to third-party pages: If a frequently cited resource could credibly include your product or data, propose an evidence-based update. Treat this like targeted PR or link outreach: demonstrate the page will be more useful with your contribution.
- Create a better canonical source: If cited pages are shallow or outdated, publish an authoritative page on your site that answers the same prompts directly. Structure it for quick retrieval: clear questions, concise answers, and data or buyer-focused detail where relevant.
- Optimize pages for retrieval: For product and factual content, use accurate schema, concise answerable copy and clear data points. Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) systems surface precise facts; structured markup and directly answerable content increase the chance your page will be selected as a source.
Prioritize actions against sources cited across multiple prompts but with low or no brand mentions — those yield the highest ROI for outreach or content investment.
Platform differences, cadence and limits
Different AI platforms favor different source mixes. Run identical prompts, language and location settings when comparing platforms to get meaningful differences. Expect variance: one model may cite retailers more often, another may prefer knowledge bases.
Track changes regularly. Citation patterns and mention rates shift as models update and content is refreshed. Export snapshots (CSV, Sheets or Excel) or schedule reports so you can measure whether outreach or content changes move the needle.
Note practical limits: commercial tracking tools often set prompt quotas by plan level. Match your prompt coverage to the volume of buyer intent you need to monitor.
What to do next (a compact playbook)
Turn discovery into measurable work with this starter routine: assemble 20–50 buyer-focused prompts that reflect common customer questions; run them daily for two weeks to build a baseline of cited domains and pages; then pick the top five cited pages where your brand is missing. For each target, choose outreach, a content build, or a product-page optimization and schedule measurement over the following month.
Repeat the cycle: tracking reveals which external pages influence AI answers, and deliberate updates — on other sites or your own — are the practical route to earn citations and mentions. That steady, evidence-driven approach moves visibility from guesswork to a measurable program.
