Amazon announced on Aug. 19 that Prime Air will expand drone delivery to five additional U.S. metropolitan areas — Chicago, Syracuse, Cleveland, Atlanta and Boise — advancing a push to serve nearly 500 U.S. cities and towns by the end of 2026. For retailers and logistics teams, the rollout underscores that drone delivery is moving from isolated pilots toward meaningful geographic scale in select markets.

What’s launching now

Amazon says the five new markets will go live “soon,” with more communities coming later this year. The company frames the expansion as part of a plan to increase Prime Air’s footprint roughly sixfold from today’s coverage to nearly 500 cities and towns by the end of 2026.

Prime Air is already active in 10 U.S. metro areas, including Baton Rouge, Dallas, Detroit, Houston, Kansas City, Omaha, Phoenix, San Antonio, Tampa and Waco. The service also recently launched in Darlington, England — Amazon’s first Prime Air market outside the U.S.

How Prime Air works and the customer experience

Each Prime Air site serves an area of about 175 square miles. Amazon says some orders can arrive in as little as 30 minutes, though most deliveries take roughly 60 minutes from checkout.

Eligible items must weigh 5 pounds or less and fit inside a large shoebox; Amazon estimates that covers “more than 60% of the items customers are most frequently purchasing.” Prime members pay no fee on drone orders of $50 or more; smaller Prime orders incur a $2.99 fee and non‑Prime orders a $4.99 fee.

In covered areas, the drone delivery option appears automatically while browsing eligible products and at checkout. First‑time customers must designate an outdoor delivery point such as a driveway or yard; they can change that location for future orders. Before releasing a package, Amazon says the drone inspects the drop zone for people, pets, vehicles and other obstacles.

Safety, setbacks and regulatory context

Scaling drone networks requires regulatory and engineering milestones. The FAA in May 2024 authorized Prime Air to operate beyond a remote operator’s visual line of sight, a key clearance for broader service.

Amazon now uses its MK30 drone, which the company says can fly in light rain, reach about 7.5 miles and operates quieter than earlier models. Operational hiccups have occurred: a January 2025 pause addressed dust interference with the MK30’s altitude sensor via a software fix, and an October 2025 incident where two MK30s collided with a crane near a launch site led to FAA and NTSB inquiries and added visual-inspection procedures.

Amazon describes onboard cameras and sensors plus a detect‑and‑avoid system that it says lets drones “independently see and make real‑time decisions while in flight.” The company also states camera data is processed on the aircraft and that no employee monitors a live feed; it says drones do not track or record individuals.

Competition and commercial implications

Amazon’s expansion arrives as other major retailers and logistics providers scale their own drone programs. Walmart reports more than 1 million drone deliveries and is partnering with Wing to build a network of over 270 locations by 2027. Zipline has a strategic partnership with Uber to expand U.S. drone deliveries, and DoorDash is developing DoorDash Air with commercial flights expected to begin in fall 2026.

For retailers, agencies and fulfillment teams, the practical implications are immediate: identify which SKUs qualify for drone delivery, assess inventory placement relative to Prime Air service zones, and test pricing and promotional tactics that factor in drone speed and fees.
