Kohl’s is enlarging its home assortment with new small kitchen appliances from Martha Stewart and stainless-steel and ceramic cookware from Bobby Flay — moves that add merchandising breadth at a moment when the retailer is trying to steady sales and sharpen in-store traffic drivers.
What’s launching
Kohl’s will roll out an expanded Martha Stewart collection that adds core small electrics — mixers, griddles, slow cookers and milk frothers — and, for the first time at the brand, a home-fragrance candles line, the retailer said.
Beginning in September, Bobby Flay’s line will grow to include stainless-steel and ceramic cookware sets plus individual frying pans. Kohl’s described the Martha Stewart items as combining “elevated design, practical functionality and everyday value,” and said the Bobby Flay cookware is “designed for even heating and easy cleanup.” Those descriptions reflect the retailer’s positioning of the products.
Where this fits in Kohl’s merchandising
The home launches join several recent category initiatives. In March Kohl’s expanded its beauty assortment by adding MAC Cosmetics across more than 850 Sephora at Kohl’s locations and bringing YSL Beauty into nearly 200 stores. The retailer also refreshed its SO juniors brand with a new SO Office Edit capsule and renewed accessories, coupled with improved in-store displays and clearer signage.
These assortments are part of Kohl’s broader effort to diversify traffic drivers and create content-rich merchandising moments that can be used in both digital and physical channels.
Sales backdrop and why the launches matter
In the company’s most recent quarter, Kohl’s reported net sales of $3.3 billion, down less than 1% year over year, with comparable sales also down by less than 1%. Sephora at Kohl’s sales fell 4% in the quarter. The retailer has adjusted its full-year outlook, forecasting net sales and comparable sales to be flat to down 1.5%.
For merchandisers and marketers, celebrity-backed home goods deliver tactical benefits: clearly themed floor sets, digitally focused product pages, bundled promotions and celebrity-driven content such as recipes, demonstrations and how-to assets. Those hooks can support acquisition campaigns, increase average order value and refresh category pages without a full category reinvention.
Execution will determine impact
Assortment expansion alone rarely produces sustained growth. Pricing, inventory allocation, promotional cadence and the scale and timing of marketing spend will determine whether these lines drive incremental traffic and larger baskets or simply reallocate existing demand across shelf space.
For partner agencies and internal merchandising teams, immediate practical questions include: will Kohl’s position the launches as national or regionally prioritized rollouts; how will price tiers and bundles be structured; and what split between in-store and online inventory will be used. The retailer has not disclosed those operational details.
Metrics to watch
Three indicators will show whether the celebrity lines produce durable upside: product-level sell-through, any lift to average order value, and the performance of related digital campaigns (click-throughs, conversion rates and return on ad spend). Early sell-through and campaign performance will influence inventory strategy and promotional plans for the holiday season.
What to watch next
Watch for the timing and scale of Kohl’s promotional activity around these launches and for any follow-up commentary from the retailer about inventory allocation or marketing plans tied to the Martha Stewart and Bobby Flay lines. For marketers: prepare creative assets and testing plans for bundles and regional promos, and set up rapid sell-through reporting so merchandising teams can react in real time.
